Hello Parents!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! We had another fantastic week of school and your children worked very hard! We are getting into the swing of our routines and schedules!

We have been modeling/practicing what good readers and writers do all week! Our Writer’s Notebooks turned out amazing! Thank you for your help in getting these done at home! The kids put them out and we shared them museum style and then talked about them to generate ideas for our narrative writing that we will start this week! In Grammar we review when to capitalize and what makes up a good sentence! This week I will introduce the words subject and predicate and we will discuss nouns.

In Math we reviewed Place Value of numbers and compared numbers using greater than, less than and equal to. On Friday I introduced them to rounding to the nearest ten, ask them about our Rounding Rap!! This week will continue to work on rounding the nearest ten and nearest hundred. Later this week and into next we will start addition strategies with two and three digit numbers. We will learn several strategies to help with this skill.

In Social Studies we learned about the 2 important Mountain Ranges and 6 Rivers that third graders need know. On Monday the students will fill out a study guide on this and on Wednesday we will have a test on these standards. We will then move into our study of American Indians!

Homework Folders: Thank you for your patience as we worked out some glitches with our homework last week. I heard from several that the Connect Ed homework did not work as planned with the sheet. That is okay as it was just an activity so you can see how to navigate the My Math site. Also in Math if it says addition/subtraction practice, that just means you practice as you wish, either with flash cards, apps, workbooks or math sites. The students will be getting their Sumdog logins this week. Sumdog is a math practice website. Remember to keep the Red folder in your child’s backpack every day. Also please ONLY keep homework related items in the red folder, any other communication needs to come in the blue take home folder. Reading logs will start this week and I will go over those with the class on Monday. Please continue to work in Spelling City. If ever your computer has problems just make sure you are studying somehow throughout the week to be prepared for the test on Friday!

Take Home Folders: Please use this as our daily communication. All their papers will come home via the folder. This includes notes from me, the school as well as all their work I send home. PLEASE empty the folder nightly. I actually told the students that it is their job to take their folder out daily and show it to you and to take the papers out. Many folders are coming back with papers still stuffed in the pockets. Thank you for your help with this!

Other Reminders and Important Information:

  • Please do not send the Parent Vue sheets in to me. You must bring the sheet to the office with your id to get your access code. This is new this year as Parent Vue is mainly for 4th and 5th grade for grades. The county is giving all parents access to Parent Vue this year.

  • I will be sending out a Sign Up Genius for items we are going to need for our first Stem Day on August 21st. Please be on the look out for that. Also as a reminder, that is the same day as the Eclipse. Please take note of the letter that went home last week regarding Mountain View NOT viewing the eclipse. However we will be sending viewing glasses home with the students.

  • Picture Day is Tuesday, August 15th. Please send envelope in that day. All students will get their picture taken this day for the yearbook even if they are not buying a package.

  • Our Funny Money Behavior system is in full force! The kids love getting awarded for great behavior, making good choices and working hard!

  • Mark your calendars for Thursday, August 24th for our first Stem Night! More information to come!

Please continue to check the blog weekly as I will be putting important information on there as well. As always never hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns at Kristine.Carlson@cobbk12.org.
