WRITING
Quarter 1: Narrative Writing
In Q1 your 3rd student will be writing personal narratives. Your student will need to evolve from being a "news reporter" about their personal narratives into a storyteller who uses dialogue, feelings, actions, and lots of descriptive details to bring their stories to life. This requires them to understand how to punctuate dialogue and also how to use language that will bring their five senses to life. Check out the resources below to help with both!
Quarter 2: Informational Writing
In Q2 your 3rd grade student will be writing informational text. As an information writer, your student becomes an "expert" on a topic and then through their writing they teach us (the readers) about their topic. Below you will find the informational writing rubric that will be used to assess your students writing. You will also find resources to help your student become an expert on a topic. Enjoy!
Quarter 3: Opinion Writing
In Q3, your 3rd grade student is going to be writing Opinion/Persuasive text. They will be asked to look at their world and imagine how it could be better to grow ideas for possible writing projects. The format will vary from speeches to petitions to persuasive letters. I encourage you to have discussions with your child about opinions they may already have about the world around them and ask them to persuade you to feel the same.
Quarter 4: Fictional Narrative Writing
In Q4, we will be writing adaptations to fairy tales. Explore the many resources online that are great examples of the original fairytales and many of the adaptations that have already been created. A few of those resources are below.
