Hello Parents!
We had a wonderful first week of school!! I really have enjoyed meeting and getting to know your children! They have worked hard to learn the routines and procedures of our beautiful new school and our classroom! We met the Third Grade Experts, Ready to Learn Robert, Respectful Rachel, Responsible Ryan and Really Safe Rita! We discussed that if we are not behaving like these "experts" in our classroom that it will be hard for us to do well with our academics!! We also talked about having a Growth Mindset versus a Fixed Mindset. Growth Mindset means we do not give up and we say we can do anything if we try hard, do our best and talk positively! Hopefully your child shared with you the work we did with these activities! Also ask your child about earning Funny Money!

Thank you for sending in all the supplies and items from our wish list! We took time this week to get all our folders and notebooks ready for each subject. This week we will start homework and the red homework folder will come home with your child on Monday. It will be due back the following Monday. Please read through all the directions and information so you know what is expected from your child each week!
Mrs. Roach has posted first quarter standards on the Resource page along with links to some of the websites we will be using this year. Take time to browse through them!
Please remember a healthy snack each day for your child. They may also bring a water bottle to keep on their desk. If anyone would like to send in extra snacks for our snack bank for days students forget their snack, it would be greatly appreciated. Please keep it peanut free. Thank you!
If you ever have a change in transportation other than the way they went home this week, please send in a note. Please use or blue take home folders as a means of communication to and from home. Speaking take home folders, I told the children it is their responsibility to show you their folder each night. Please read the important notes, sign and return anything that needs returning and keep any of your child's work. I appreciate your help in keeping their folders organized!
Here is a look at what we will be learning!
Reading/ELA-We will be setting up our Language Arts and Reading Response journals to use as an ongoing resource of skills we learn each week. The students keep these journals for use throughout the year. We will be learning strategies that good readers use to become fluent readers with a deep understanding of what they are reading! We will also be reviewing punctuation, capitalization, nouns and verbs. Spelling City will start this week as well. See note in homework folder regarding this as the students will take a pretest on Monday to determine their word list. The spelling pattern for this week is consonant-vowel-consonant-e words.
Writing- In our first Unit of Study for writing, we will be working on Personal Narratives. They will be writing true stories about themselves trying to elaborate, use dialogue and correct spelling, capitalization and punctuation. Your child will be decorating a writing journal to use for writing this year. Directions will be in your child's folder and they will need to bring back on Wednesday.
Math- We will begin the concept of Place Value in Math. We will be reviewing place value to the thousands place and will begin the concept of rounding. This can be a hard concept for third graders. Will will be using My Math and there is a link to ConnectED on the Resource page where the math support can be found.
Social Studies- We will begin the year with our focus on map skills. We will be discussing important rivers and mountain ranges along with longitude and latitude.
